Philippine-German Solar Energy Forum

The welcome area of the Philippine-German Solar Energy Forum was flanked by technology exhibition “renewables – Made in Germany” of the German Energy Agency (dena). The banners touch all renewable energy technologies and are used to draw attention to the possible applications of renewable energies and to support technology transfers.

A participant looks through the banners about renewable energies. The banners present solar energy technologies and also discuss their advantages, technologies, as well as their prospects in the future. For more information on the banners, please visit dena-website: http://www.renewables-made-in-germany.com/en/publications/technology-exhibition.html

The participants of the Forum were welcomed at the registration booth by the organizing Chambers of Commerce GPCCI and ECCP and were ushered inside the function room of the Solar Energy Forum.

The Forum was made possible by the funding of the German Ministry of Economics and Technology and locally organized by the GIZ, German Chamber and European Chamber. Above picture shows Reiner Allgeier, President of GPCCI, during his opening remarks. Others giving their welcome remarks were Wolfgang Möllers, Deputy Country Director of GIZ (picture below), Henry Schumacher, Vice President External Affairs ECCP and Christof Wegner, Counsellor Commercial Affairs of the German Embassy.

With a total of 150 attendees, the Forum was well attended by both private sector and government representatives. The speakers from Germany and the Philippines discussed several topics. The presentations can be downloaded from our website.

The German delegates together with German Embassy’s Counsellor for Commercial Affairs, Christof Wegner, GPCCI 1st Vice President Guenter Matschuck, GIZ Program Manager Volker Steigerwald, PSPA Founding President Tetchi Capellan, BSW representative Jan Knaack and Markus Dietrich, GIZ consultant, after the successful Forum.

The participants and members of the delegation were given time after the forum to further discuss opportunities and ideas in a marketplace setting to further look into business opportunities.

On Tuesday, Undersecretary Cristino L. Panlilio of the Board of Investments invited the German delegates to meet with him and get an investment briefing on doing business in the Philippines. After the meeting, the delegates took the opportunity to discuss their individual concerns with the Undersecretary.

In the evening, the delegates attended GPCCI’s Economic Forum with a talk of Oscar Reyes of MERALCO. If you are interested in Mr. Reyes’ presentation, you may download it here.

Besides from their individual B2B-meetings, the delegates were invited to join several discussions. On Tuesday, GIZ invited for a workshop dubbed Education for a Growing Solar Market. The round table discussion focused on detecting the necessary and existing educational systems to build up, maintain and enhance a solar industry in the Philippines.

On Wednesday, the participants got together for a workshop with Philippine financial institutions in order to learn more about “Financing Solar Projects”.

After two days of B2B meetings in Manila, the delegation took an early flight to Cebu in order to meet Visayan and Mindanao-based companies of renewable energy sector. The well-attended German-Philippine Solar Energy in Casino Español was attended by more than 100 participants.

During the Forum, the German companies had a chance to present their company to the audience (see above picture). There was time once again during the market place session for the participants and the German delegates to further discuss opportunities after the solar energy forum.

The visit by the German delegates came to a close with a wrap-up workshop wherein they discussed their impressions and had an outlook into future projects and opportunities on how to continue promoting “renewables – Made in Germany” in the Philippines.

“renewables – Made in Germany” initiative

Most of you have already heard about GPCCI’s recent involvement in the  “renewables – Made in Germany” initiative. But – what’s this about?

Since German companies have become world leaders in the fields of photovoltaic and solar thermal energy as well as in other renewable energy sectors and due to early and consistent promotion, Germany is a market and innovation leader.

The German government therefore is actively supporting the worldwide dissemination of cutting-edge German renewable energy technology and know-how since 2002. The transfer of renewable energy know-how, the promotion of foreign trade and the facilitation of international development cooperation are part of the “renewables – Made in Germany” initiative.

The initiative is carried out under the auspices of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology in cooperation with various partner organizations. For the Philippines, GIZ Berlin and GIZ office Manila, ECCP and GPCCI are offering the following:

Business information & contact events, organized by German-Bilateral Chamber of Commerce (AHK), where German business representatives showcase their expertise and products and present possibilities for cooperation.

dena Solar Roofs Program for Foreign Market Development coordinated by the German Energy Agency (dena), which realises flagship projects for German renewable energy expertise in the field of photovoltaics, solar cooling and solar thermal energy.

Fact-finding missions, realised by Germany Trade and Invest (GTAI), where interested parties have the opportunity to participate in a group visit to Germany and benefit from a comprehensive information and visitor programme.

Reception of foreign delegations of political and economic decision-makers around the world by staff of the German Energy Agency (dena).

Trade fair participations, where experts lecture on renewable energy and energy efficiency at the “renewables – Made in Germany” exhibition stand of the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology.

Virtual market place: www.renewablesb2b.com, supervised by the German-Hellenic Chamber of Commerce, which is designed to facilitate international business.

Renewable Energy Project Development Program, implemented by the German International Cooperation (GIZ), which facilitates business partnerships and the exchange of experience and know-how between German renewable energy companies and those in developing and emerging countries.

Technology exhibition, developed by the German Energy Agency (dena), which documents the specific know-how of German companies on 26 charts in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian and Arabic.

In South East Asia, the following countries benefit from the initiative: Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam.

GPCCI’s involvement in the PV Summit, its promotion at Intersolar as well as the RENAC-training on Solar technology last April were first steps into the right direction. Due to these activities, which were initiated by GPCCI, the initiative was able to connect and present itself to the Renewable Energy Sector in the Philippines already.
